The New Engine '32'

Background

Engine 32  (A 1980 Hann) was Riverdale's first and only Custom Pumper.  The normal replacement time for a pumper is 20 years. Engine 32 will be close to 25 years old before it is retired later this year.

The fire department has been working on the specifications for the  replacement of Engine 32 for over 5 years. In September 2003 the Borough  went out to bid for the replacement of the 24 year old engine with a new  custom pumper. In November 2003 the bid was awarded to Pierce  Manufacturing, the largest manufacturer of fire apparatus in the world.

The Truck committee spent the next few months working with Pierce on  the detailed design documents needed prior to construction. Residents  are welcome to visit the firehouse Monday nights and view the documents  and drawings.

Construction began the week of May 15th and expected completion is June 30th. Delivery is expected Mid July.

What CAFS System does Pierce offer?

The new Hercules CAFS delivers advanced technology that's simple, reliable and affordable. It is up to five times more effective than water alone for fire suppression and boasts tremendous knockdown capabilities. The system can also lay down a  long-lasting protective blanket and helps protect firefighters from exposure to heat and products of combustion.

What are the benefits of CAFS?

Since CAFS mixes air with the water/foam the weight of the hose lines are 50% less, than that of water. That allows firefighters to move the lines quicker, and with less manpower.
The L.A. County fire department conducted a test using plain water, water with foam, and CAFS to extinguish a house fire. The results were described in many firefighting magazines and books. Below are 2 links articles, as well as a excerpt for one of the articles outlining the benefits of CAFS. These benefits will save lives( residents and firefighters) as well as reduce property damage caused by fire and water.

Plain Water Class A Foam   Compressed Air Foam  % Improvement
Fire Knockdown Time (Sec.)  50 seconds 25 seconds 11 seconds 78%
Water Used (gal)   75 gallons 44 gallons 16 gallons 79%
Time to reduce temperature below  200 degrees  F (min:sec)  6:03 minutes 1:45 minutes 1:28 minutes 76 %
